How to Take Better City Photos at Night With Your Phone
Practical ideas for steadier shots, cleaner light and more natural-looking night photos.

Night photography can look impressive even with a phone, but the camera has much less light to work with. A few simple adjustments can make photos noticeably sharper and more balanced.
Find a stable position
Phones often use slower shutter speeds in dark conditions. Holding the phone against a wall, railing or other stable surface can reduce blur.
If your phone activates a night mode automatically, stay still until the exposure is complete.
Avoid the brightest lights
Very bright signs and streetlights can make the rest of the scene appear too dark. Try changing your angle so those lights are not directly in the center of the frame.
Tapping a medium-bright part of the scene can also help the camera choose a more balanced exposure.
Use reflections
Wet pavement, windows and polished surfaces can reflect city lights and add depth to night images.
Reflections are especially useful when the scene itself feels visually empty.
Do not over-edit
Heavy sharpening, extreme saturation and strong noise reduction can make night photos look artificial.
Small adjustments to exposure, contrast and warmth usually preserve a more natural smartphone look.
